Your Grandfather's Occupation

Right now, it will be easy to enter what your grandfather did for a living so do so today. It is going to be harder to find the occupation the further you go back, but it is so much fun getting to know those ancestors. Be sure to check the censuses that come up, Quite often, they will include the occupation.

What are 4th Cousins??

You just might be wondering who they are and how they are connected to you?? Actually a 4th cousin might not be a cousin at all. It simply means that you share a little bit of DNA from a great, great, great grandparent likely from the 1700s. It is still pretty fuzzy from I have read to date but genetics is a hard thing to get my head around... especially this early in the morning. haha

Keep Asking For Photos

Let your family know that you want any old family photos that they might not want anymore or might like to share... thanks to digital cameras!. My sister as a matter of fact was in the vicinity of the first house where mom and dad once lived. Guess who they sent it to!  Actually, I lived there until I was 6 years old and I loved staring at that little house, trying to remember which window was mine!

A New Way To Look For Things

We are always so careful about what we use for our search queries. I read this a couple of years ago and thought that it would be something fun to do! Try something just for fun and see what it turns up!! Here's an example..." John Harland's Sister"  I don't know what you will get because I just thought of the term, but it would be fun to see what happens.

What Did Your Ancestor Do For a Living??

Don't forget to look for occupations for your ancestors. I found one that is listed as a "janitress" at a public school.  That was the first occupation for a woman who wasn't a housewife or a seamstress that I had found.

Immigrants!

Are you lucky enough to know the immigration stories of your family. Do a little asking around!! My daughter-in-law is from Poland and she and her parents immigrated to Canada in the 80s without knowing a word of English. I know a little about their new life in Canada, but its time for me to ask her Mom more stories about their first encounters with Canada. If you have the opportunity, do the same with your family. Great info to add to your tree!

It doesn't matter where your family immigrated from or to... the stories are incredible!!

Collecting Church Cookbooks

Have you ever thought of putting out an alert on Google stating that you are collecting you own hometown church cookbooks?? Who knows... you might hear from someone who actually has saved them all of these years and contains a recipe belonging to your great grandmother. I just happened to have a church cookbook with recipes donated by my mother and my aunt! I'm definitely saving those for my granddaughter.  My mother's recipe is for By Gosh and By Golly Cookies and my aunt offered her recipe for Porcupines... (meatballs really lol... they are full of recipe which makes them look like little porcupines!)

The Doctor Mystery..

Here is a dilemma that I was faced with today. I was trying to decide if this was my Samuel Fulton... or not. In the 1880 census for New York it stated that he was a farmer. Five years later I found the same name, same county and the same wife but this time he was a physician. I find it odd that so many things have lined up. I think that I will have to spend a little time to see what (if this is the same Samuel) was really up to! There just might be an interesting story here!

Mistakes Happen!!!

This post will be short and sweet!! Remember that every time something is copied from the original document mistakes can be made. Refer to the original record whenever possible. And how is that possible you might be wondering?? The older records can be in pretty bad shape and the indexer has to try to read what he is seeing. Sometimes is is almost impossible. There is actually a skill to being able to read records but mistakes still happen. It is so easy to invert numbers in dates... I do this all the time and have to double check what I have written before I hit the publish button on my software. Your eyes see one thing and your brain something completely different!

Trying to Read a Record/Document

When you are looking at records, you will notice that they can sometimes be REALLY had to read. I have one ancestor with the middle initial "N" in one place and an "H" in another. This was the same man but the indexers couldn't tell the difference in the original document...  Keep in mind just how similar the letters are when you are looking at a record.

Kathleen Eleanor Clark

Kathleen Eleanor Clark

BORN... 1909 in New York, US
MARRIED... 1 Oct 1932 in Wyoming County, New York
DIED... 1994 in Monroe, New York. (buried beside husband)

SPOUSE... LESTER H HARRIDINE

PARENTS...  BENJAMIN CLARK
NANCY JENNING...

* I found her husband's gravestone and it also contained his wife's name... Eleanor Harridine. That was all that I had to go one. When I found a marriage record, it referred to his new wife as Kathleen E Clark.  I almost dismissed it... thank heavens that I noticed the "E". Sure enough, I would spot another record stating a Kathleen Eleanor Harridine.  It's really easy to dismiss one record that doesn't seem to fit.

Those People Don't Belong on Your Tree!!

Just because you locate a record and both parents names are correct, don't assume that these individuals belong on your tree. Its a very easy trap to fall into. Been there and done that... a few times!!

Could This Actually Be a Maiden Name??

I came across a birth record for a family that I am working on, containing the following name...

Ewart Gladstone Gilroy

It is such an unusual name, that the first thing that occurred to me was that the middle name was actually the mother's maiden name. It might not be the case, but it is worth checking out, especially when the other children in the family were given middle names that were more fitting for the times!

Sadly, most of the time, you have to go to a courthouse to locate this info. But, you might be lucky enough to find that someone has scanned it and put it on line. Just out out of curiosity, I googled "will of James Rook" and this came up...

It then went on to show you more places to look. Good luck with this. You just never know what you are going to find!

Where To Look For Photos of Your Ancestors Online

Have you ever wondered what one of your ancestors might have looked like??  I was  searching Google Images this morning  to see if someone has posted a great grandmother of mine. I was looking for a Mary Harland to see if there were any photos of her when she was younger, but no luck... but there were a lot of photos of Mary Harlands... just not the right Mary Harland :(

And if you do find your ancestor,  the photos often took you to a website with more info!! Will try Mary Rook next to see if I have any luck!!

What Don't You Know About Your Grandmother??

Or pick a different  female on your tree and spend some time trying to get to know her better. Family Trees are so much more than just names and dates.

I just found out 60 years later that  for Christmas, my grandmother made a white cake... kind of like a wedding cake with those silver balls scattered around the icing. I ask my mom questions and probably drive her crazy, but one day out of the blue she told me about that cake. I had never heard about it until just this year! How crazy is that!

Mary Moon

This morning I found an interesting name. Maria  Moon was born the 24th of June 1781 in the United States... not exactly sure where as of yet but her husband , Isaac Woodcock was born in Kinderhook, New York, so there is a chance that she was too. .

They had most of their children in Kinderhook, but son Isaac was suddenly born in Canada before they would return to Kinderhook to have three more. Must double check to see if this actually happened.

She died in 1860 most likely in Canada as that is where her husband Isaac died three years earier.

I have also found other spellings for her name... Maria, Martha and Maritje so far!

They would go on to have 6 children that I have found so far...
Elisabeth Woodcock
Margarit Woodcock
Isaac Woodcock
John Woodcock
Catherine Woodcock

If I could have one wish is that this family would use each given name ONCE!  You have no idea how often they reuse their names!

Sorting Out Your Ancestors

Just a heads up on a family tree program that I am working with. Lets just say that I have a LOT of people on my tree. Rootsmagic allows you to color code your ancestors according to grandparents... Now all of the people in Granddads line are red and whenever I am working and come across a person in red, I know that I am working in Granddads line. Using the color coding feature makes sorting out your ancestors really easy!
