Mrs. Sharpe's Traditions by Sarah Ban Breathnach

I have this book on my shelf, but it is usually December when I pull it out and began reading about how a mother prepares for a Victoria Christmas! Some of you might wonder what that has to do with American ancestors, but there is a very good chance your ancestors were originally from England.. :) I can't remember when I bought it, but it's probably on Amazon if you want to take a look! And it has a ribbon bookmark lol... I love when I find those in books. So much nicer than a plain paper one!

Anne Brown

I'm concentrating on the Brown family today... I don't think that there is a person alive who doesn't have at least one Brown family somewhere in their tree!! Really Getting To Know Your Great Grandparents!

The easiest way to get to know your ancestors and where they lived is to print off some maps and get to know everything you can about the area where they lived. What was the winter like? Did they live on a farm? How big was the farm. Those were just a few of the questions that popped into my mind. The more that you can find out, the easier it will be to find out more.

Now look at all the little towns that are withing 5 miles/kms of where they lived. That is where you will find the people most likely to marry into your family in the years to come. Distance was a lot more important than it is today!

Mistakes on Death Records

I wish this wasn't the case, but it is what it is!  You are going to find discrepancies in all kinds of records. That is why it is sooo important to look for other records to compare facts. Actually the more records you can find the better.

*One record that can contain a lot of discrepancies are death records... for obvious reasons. There is an informant listed and it could very well be a family member. Their frame of mind is... well, you can imagine and the answers that they will provide could be a little off. They are dealing with their grief obviously, so take down all of the details in the record and compare them with what you have and if everything is a matches, you can move on! :)

All About Timelines

Time lines are a great way to plug holes in your family tree! It is amazing what you don't see if the timeline isn't staring you in the face! I just pulled up such a timeline that showed when a father was born, when he got married, when his first child was born, when she married and even her death date. Everything fits. Now to find more children for the family... to see if they are born where they should be and the dates seem right. If they don't, it's a really good indication, that something is out of whack!

Pick an Uncle!

Choose an uncle that you are old enough to remember. Now what did he enjoy most about life? Family trees are all about stories. For example, my Uncle Bob loved to play the piano. He never took a lesson but could would hear a song and then be able to play it. Never understood how he did that, but he was amazing!

My Great Aunt Lou's In-Law's Occupation

I had to think about this one because she's my husband's great aunt and I had only met her once! She lived all of her life in London, England and somehow could sew well enough to work with the dress makers of the Queen.

I remember the first time that I met her. We were on our honeymoon and we simply showed up at her door. She was sooo surprised and recognized my new husband in less than a couple of minutes. She was the sweetest thing and that's not the only story that I have about her. When we had our first little boy about 3 years later, she made him the cutest little clown. I don't think that a machine touched any part of it... nothing like the dolls that you see in the stores these days!! Now that is something that I will be able to hand down in the family!

The Family Doesn't Seem To Fit!

THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT... Don't assume just because a family name is showing up in the right town, that it is your family!

I'm trying to verify an individual right now living in New York (right place and right surname) and I can't link them up no matter how hard I try.

What Works For You?

You can either reach out to people when you are hurting or keep it private. I don't know if there is a right way to do it, but I like ...
