More On Maiden Names

I have gotten fairly good at tracking down maiden names but I do hate the fact that the spellings change so often!! And if my family is anything to go by... it's the men that change the spelling. How may times has your maiden name change spellings?

It would be nice if there was a way to keep those maiden names in the family somehow. Not that I did it in my own family, but I could have added "maiden names" as middle names for my own kids... but I never thought of it!

DNA Results Have Arrived

It was a long 6 weeks, but my results finally came in this morning. I had some idea thanks to an extensive paper trail, but I was in for a few surprises.  You can guess what I will be doing for the rest of the day!!!

Well, it finally arrived! I have taken a peek at it and I was in for quite the surprise. I suspected that there was going to be some British DNA present, but not quite so much. I'm 42% and no one in the family has lived in England since my Great Grandfather. There has been a lot of diluting going on since then. So 42%??  My hubby was born in England so I have been kidding him all morning about having more British DNA than him!

My next largest percentage was Scandinavian! That came in at a whopping 23%.  I was expecting French to come in at second place because of my grandmother's line. (Just look at my coloring!!) Apparently my French genes weren't as strong as I had thought.  I have yet to find one person from Sweden or Denmark!  Guess that I had better start looking!!

And then there are the other little coincidences that showed up thanks to personal preferences. It's funny to find that things that really interest you can be tracked back to specific countries. I think there's a little vampire blood in me too. haha!!

My Father Inherited Some Nasty DNA From His Grandfather

I was reviewing the death certificate of my great grandfather and  and noticed something that I had missed. I didn't really miss it, it was just that I couldn't  read the handwriting of the doctor. After all of this time, I guess that I'm getting better at it and there it was...he died of ULCERATION OF THE STOMACH!   Dad had this happen to him when he was in his late 40s. He survived but lost 1/2 of his stomach.

***I think that I have found another passion. I love the stories that I turn up on my family tree, and now DNA is coming in a very close second!

My Favorite Cookie... Did DNA Play a Part in This??

I love Snickerdoodle Cookies above any other kind of cookie. Now the odd thing is that no one else in the family can stand them!! So where did I inherit my taste buds that my kids didn't inherit??  Is there a favorite cookie in your family?? Have you ever wondered where it came from???

Census Records Can Be One Big Pain in the Neck!!

By law,  census records from the last 70 years are not available to the public. That might be why you haven't been able to find some of the people on your tree. And if that isn't enough to annoy you, there can be all kinds of mistakes.  I copy down what I find and then see if it works. Sometimes they can provide you with SO MUCH INFO... and that is what I'm always hoping to find!!!

More Info On Your Grandparents

Do you remember if your grandparents preferred a special brand of hand soap? For one set of grandparents, I have no idea, but for my mom's parerents,  I remember it vividly. It was a big oval bar of Dove soap. I can even smell the scent of it if I close my eyes!

Think Back To Your Grandmother's House

What kind of phone did your grandparents own? Describe it as well as you can and where it sat or hung in their house. My grandparents had just one phone and it was a blue princess style phone! I'm not sure that I ever saw them use it. The phone was probably a gift lol!!

Something to Watch For

I was just working on a couple who I thought was married... but a red flag went up when I saw where they were both born.  It might mean nothing, it might mean everything. If nothing else, make a little a note for the person in question and don't fill in anything until you have had a chance to go back and do a bit more digging.

I love the fact that Rootsmagic has a bookmark feature. That will instantly let you know that a particular person needs more research done and if you left the note mentioned above, you will know exactly where you left off when you return a day or so later.

Something About Your Dad!

Think back...

Is there anything that your dad wouldn't eat?? Has that been passed down to anyone else in the family. Genetics fascinate me lol.  My dad wouldn't eat pizza... definitely something that has not continued to be passed down in our family. I wonder where it came form to affect him in such a way??

Now go and add it to the Note Section of your family tree!!

Nearly Made a Mistake

Be really careful that you go back and check your spelling when adding people to your tree. I inherited hundreds and hundred of ancestor cards from mom and each day I add a few more of them to the tree. Thank heavens that she is still around so that I can ask her about some of the people listed. One maiden name that I was adding this morning was "Parker" but I typed in Partet!  The "t" is right next to the "r" making it an incredibly easy mistake to made.

Luckily I caught it.  If I hadn't... I would have had the hardest time figuring out her line!!

DNA Test...

Apparently they are still WAY behind. I sent my sample on the 28th of December and they still haven't begun processing it.  They did tell me that the labs have been crazy since Christmas so you know that a ton of people did receive their kit from Santa lol!! So it you are considering it... and it's a great way to get through the long dark days of winter, the waiting is almost worth it.

*I also have a 10% off coupon if anyone is considering it.  And as hard as it is to wait, it is exciting at the same time. I look every morning, wondering if today could be the day!

What Works For You?

You can either reach out to people when you are hurting or keep it private. I don't know if there is a right way to do it, but I like ...
