Mar 31... 26 Days of 30 Day Meditation

I managed the 15 minutes, but my mind is soooo tied up with the passing of the seconds that it is very distracting. I like the silence more than the guided meditations, but I guess that I need a combination of both to keep my mind from concentrating on the passing of time. I wonder how long it takes before you can get a handle on it.

I just learned that a friend who I had years and years ago, loves meditation. I think that the forces might have brought us back together again. It will be nice to talk to someone about the issues that I'm having. I also grabbed two meditation books from the library today. Must find a specific time to read them each day.

Getting closer and closer to the end... Maybe that is why she came into my life!

Mar 30... 25 days of 30 Day Meditation

 I was getting a little bored with the same routine every single day and decided to try to do something a little different. I simply set the timer and then stood at the bedroom window. I know that you are going to think that this is just asking for trouble, but I still paid attention to my breathing and every time that my thoughts began to wander, I brought them back. All I was doing is staring at the grass and that was holding my attention. I was quite amazed that it actually worked, but it did.

Mar 29... 24 days of the 30 Day Meditation


Feeling better today and my meditation is already done for the day... at least the first one anyway. I am finding that I can always add a few minutes throughout the day. The 15 minutes is still hard at the beginning, but I'm hoping that it will get easier. I never thought that I would ever master that, but I did, so if I can do it... anyone can.

We Used To Meditate As Teens And Didn't Even Know It!!

Can you remember that delicious feeling of sunbathing when you were a teen. The feel of the sun on your back and how relaxed you felt. You probably laid their for an hour or so! Who knew that you could meditate so long just concentrating on the feel of the sun on your back.

But...

We are all grown up now and we know that we are just asking for trouble if we lay in the sun hoping to get that gorgeous tan. Those days are over!! We all know about skin cancer so we don't do the whole sun bathing thing anymore, but YOU DID MEDITATE!! You just didn't know that you were meditating. And didn't you feel awesome when you got up!!

So, you simply need to bring that experience back to you but in a different way.That is on today's to-do list... find a way to meditate that feels just as good as sunbathing did. For me, that's going for a long walk in the woods... and I still slather on sunblock. I'm not taking any chances!!

Sick Day Meditation Update


Managed to get through my 15 minutes of meditation and it wasn't as hard as I expected it to be. I didn't think about time once which on it's own is amazing... just sat down and closed my eyes and watched my breath go in and out, but my mantra was different. I said to myself... healing breaths in and sick stuff out lol...

Feeling Sick Today... Don't Want To Meditate (Day 23)

There are going to be days when you don't feel like meditating... like today for me. I'm just not feeling well and I just don't want to. But, I have come this far and I have a 23 day streak going on. So... I'm going to put the timer on for 15 minutes and then simply relax and see if I can do it. I don't know what illness will do to your program, but I'm going to do my best. I'm going upstairs and give it a try. I will let you know if I'm successful. I want to go the entire 15 minutes, but not sure if I will get there.

Forest Bathing...

 It sounds a whole lot easier than the 10 Day Retreat that I have been reading so much about. Maybe one day in the future, but this one really peeked my attention. I just might be able to do this one.  Actually I did do something like this just yesterday when the temps actually made it inviting to get outside. I walked up the long drive to the road, taking in all the sights and smells and then stood on the bridge and watched the water flow beneath me. It really was quite relaxing and had a meditating feel to it. Who knew lol??

Mar 27... 22 days of the 30 Day Meditation


I did my morning meditation  but I still have to work on NOT THINKING ABOUT TIME. It seems that once I get into it, the time does seem to go by quickly, but when I first sit down, all I can think about is how on earth I will ever be able to sit still for 15 minutes. Well, I did it, but I did have to peek at the clock and I was up to 12 minutes. Today was the first time that I have managed to get so far without having to peek. Kind of proud of myself for that!!

Did wake up at 3 a.m. and simply couldn't shut off my thoughts. Now these were happy thoughts... I had a huge break through on the family tree and I went to bed pretty excited. But I didn't want to think about them in the middle of the night. All of these people have been dead for quite a while now... they weren't going anywhere.

Anyway, I hope that you are doing well with your meditation. You never know what each day will bring!!

 I had a long talk with my mom today and she told me what her own mom went through... sad when I think about it. At least I have some idea how I got to this place and why my daughter has her own anxiety issues but in a different form than mine.

I Shouldn't Be Able To Do This!

 I was working out and meditating at the same time. That in itself is no biggie... I was on the eliptical. I close my eyes (while holding on) and do my "breathe in and breathe out" and that should keep my mind occupied. Today I was saying my mantra and still thinking about things. That seems to tell me that my left brain is still a lot stronger than my right. I wonder how long it will take before the right side catches up??

Mar 26... 21 days of the 30 Day Meditation Practice


Cannot meditate with the TV on... even if its several rooms away. I am drawn right to the sound and I can't help by listen to every word. I am really going to have to work on this. I did manage to meditate upstairs where it is quiet. It seems that I need that. I have a friend that goes "floating" for an hour whenever she can afford it and she says that it is awesome. Not sure that I could pull that one off, but she has me curious!!

What To Do... Tell yourself that you are happy, completely relaxed and grateful for everything in your life... even if your aren't. That is what your meditation is for!!

Mar 25 Day 20 of My 30 Day Meditation Practice

I promised to tell you about the technique that I was trying out about a week ago. It involves simply laying in bed for as long as you can before you get up in the morning and just listening to your breath. No stress at all... no thinking about the time,  because you really aren't meditating.  Or are you?? I now do this every single morning as well as my 15 minutes in the afternoon... and minutes here and there throughout the day.

I also began to add snippits of articles that I have been reading that will talk about what I can expect if I persue this long enough and it is AMAZING! I strongly suggest that you collect your own little snippits of information that will help you with your practice.

Being Lazy Is the Key to Success


I wonder if this is something that the newer generations are trying to work their minds around, because it certainly wasn't something my dad would condone... ever. On the other hand, I don't think that he would have thought very kindly to Meditation either.   I think that I'm going to have to give this a lot more thought but it is going to be a hard thing to sell myself. Dad  wouldn't have agreed to my giving over time each day to sit and do nothing either. That would have driven him crazy!!

Yoga For The Blues

I have to be honest... I don't like Yoga. Tried it once and ended up giving myself Iliotibial Syndrome. Took me an entire month to calm down the pain and I will likely have to continue the exercises for the rest of my life. At least that is what I have been told, and I'm not taking any chances. But I did kind of over due it... trying to prove to myself that I'm really not as old as I am!

10,000 Steps Not Enough??


 So it seems and since depression requires exercise to elevate some of the symptoms... I really didn't want to hear that they are saying that we need more than 10,000. Come on... :(  Ten thousand was hard enough.  If nothing else, I will be too exhausted to be depressed if I manage to cover this many!

Can Living in a Tall Building Cause Depression??

 I was really curious about the possibility? Personally, I would say no. Actually, I would think that living anywhere, in a highrise or the second floor surrounded by people would alleviate the problem. Living alone  or even a house in the country, would seem to contribute more to the problem. And then I think that the seasons play a huge part in the problem of depression.

Mar 24 Day 19 of My 30 Day Meditation Program


It's just day 19 and I am finding that with practice, I'm not obsessing with "fears" that once stressed me out to ridiculous degrees and I do mean ridiculous degrees! That alone is progress as far as I'm concerned. Fifteen minutes is the minimum that I do each day, but I find that I will work minutes during the day whenever I think of it. I look at it as every minute that I meditate through the day... all adds up. 

Actually, I should start tallying up all those minutes just to see how many that I have done. Good thing that I'm keeping a journal.

This Really Shouldn't Work But It Did

I really did warn you but here goes. For some reason you are going to find, regardless of how much you work at it... that your moods can bounce around like a ping pong ball. Your will feel awesome and then out of no where, you will feel as if life isn't worth a thing.  Been there and done that and I have learned from experience that all you have to do is get up from the computer and start doing something completely different. Today, I decided to clean the bathroom!  Okay, I would have preferred to bake a cake, but the bathroom really did need cleaning so  I  just got up from the computer and grabbed the cloths and cleaners and headed upstairs.  It took me all of five minutes and I really did feel better.

Part of me doesn't believe that cleaning can actually do anything lol...  but it did!

How Much Money Do You Need To Be Happy?


 Money at one time was the highest thing on the list of what I thought I needed to be happy. As I get older, it's still up there, but I have learned to control myself lol...  The article below is coming out of England and I have to admit, I am surprised at how much they really want.

Day 18 of the 30 Day Medition... Meditated Twice Today!

I can remember how hard it was at the beginning. I honestly wondered if I could pull this off. I don't know how many times I tried and then gave up because I just couldn't sit still that long. All I could think about was how much longer... how much longer??

But I think that I have fallen into a pattern... first thing in the morning before I even get out of bed and then in the middle of the afternoon. So far so good. I'm sure that I will run into some hiccups, but I'm just taking it one day at a time and I'm pretty pleased with myself today. :)

Meditation Compared To a Glass of Muddy Water


 This makes meditation make so much sense. It's like a full glass of muddy water, left to stand. Slowly the sediment sinks to the bottom of the glass and you have pure water.

At the moment, 18 days full of sediment/runaway thoughts have sunk to the bottom of the glass and the water/my mind is getting a little clearer!

Today's Reminder... Have Some Fun Today!

 I actually have a bowl of orange peel circles that I play with when I am on the phone... don't ask lol, but I find it incredibly relaxing.  Now, you might not to be bothered punching  circles with your fingernails from orange peels, but I simply do it while I'm watching TV. It's just relaxing what can I say. Now this little gadget you can also play with to relax.

I think that all of those little balls are magnetic and you just push them into place.  Obviously, it doesn't take much to amuse me. ;)

Noticed Something Today... I Think


 I tend to collect body lotions and thanks to my meditation practice (where all I do is breathe in and breathe out), I think that I'm developing a more acute sense of smell. I swear that I could smell traces of coffee in the bottle that I have been using that I never noticed before. I read something about the meditating strengthening your senses, so maybe after 17 days, something is beginning to happen??

Lol... I was just reading my post to look for spelling mistakes and am I reaching or what lol??  But, I did smell coffee and there was none brewing... I thought of that too!

New Study Reveals Another Astonishing Difference Between The Brains of Meditators and Non-Meditators

 I love reading articles about the topic. I don't think that a day goes by, that I don't pick up something new and today's article... I think that I particularly liked this line... "One can be engaged in meditation while walking, for example, or while preparing for sleep."   I was familiar with the  walking meditation, but I love the fact that you can work in a few minutes here (like getting ready for bed)   to build up all of those minutes.  I'm working on my patience, and it's getting easier granted, but  I'm sure that there are others out there who find that  15 minutes,  can seem like an eternity!  A few minutes a day is definitely worth doing.

This is one long article, so I think that I will now go back and go through it again... and it's also going to save to "Pocket" so that I can easily access it whenever I want to check it out again.

When It Comes To Anxiety... What's Normal and What's Not?

 I actually had to ask my doctor if what I was experiencing with my anxiety issues was normal. I had been experiencing them to the point that I didn't know anymore!!  She said no!  I can still remember her saying that everyone gets stressed out, it's normal to worry... but not for months at a time.

I decided to try medication for more years than I care to remember... which is why I'm now trying meditation. I'm done with meds if I can find a better way! And apparently it should also help my blood pressure at the same time.  Here's hoping.

Another 15 minutes went into my meditation bank!  You will be amazed at how fast those minutes will add up. Today wasn't as easy as yesterday, but thankfully every minute that you devote to meditating all count.  I think that I mentioned that you have somewhere between 40,000 and 50,000 thoughts go through your mind in a day. I think that I had every single one of them go through my head already this morning. And that means that if I squeeze in a few more minutes this afternoon (just something I want to do but is not mandatory for this 30 Day Challenge) I won't have any more thoughts go through my brain lol)

And have you noticed that at the bottom of every post, I add just a bit of the lyrics to a great song that I want you to sing to yourself... "My oh my, what a wonderful day. Who Can You Smile At Today??

 Yesterday, I went to the doctor and he sent me down to the lab for more blood work. Don't you just love having blood taken? And you never know if you are going to get a tech who is good at it or one who really doesn't care if the little poke makes you jump off the chair an inch.

Yesterday I struck up a conversation the minute that I got to her little cubicle. That in turn made her chatty!  And then there was the little boy who came in to see what was going on in my cubicle. Such a cute little guy and I just had to smile at him too. He disappeared a few seconds later, but I heard him tell someone in a near by cubicle  "I Love You". He just melted our hearts.

Who knew that I could get a good little story to share out of going to the lab for blood work? lol

Pinned... I Don't Want To Take Anxiety Meds For the Rest of My Life *New Updates Below

Yes, I finally did go the medication route, and they were just okay. I then decided that meds were not the way to go for the rest of my life. I have been on them for nearly seven years or so and I think that they are losing their effectiveness. I have been off them now for 6 months and we are now living in the coldest province in Canada and lets just say that I'm not very happy at the moment. It is either... go back on drugs or try something else.  I found this video or perhaps I should say that it found me.  I had tried meditating in the past and it didn't help... at all. I was never sure. But something made me watch this video from start to finish. All I can say is that I'm glad that I did.




Now that you have watched it from start to finish (and I really hope that you did) I have to say that NO WAY am I going to try this 10 Day RETREAT. I would not last even a day but it did push me to do a little reading. It actually made sense to me.  And then I went on to find another video on Vipassana Meditation (on YouTube) that said that you needed to give this 30 days to get anything out of it.  And it also said that you could start at 2 minutes if you wanted and then work your way up to the 15 minutes. Okay, I thought... I can sit still for 2 minutes!!

I'm just finishing Day 5 of my 30 Day Journey and I'm quite amazed to say that I CAN SIT FOR THE ENTIRE 15 MINUTES!! Has it been a piece of cake each day... no, but something won't let me quit. And I'm going to take you along with me, now that I have managed to stick with it. Lets see what this can do!!

Ring For A Hug

 Wouldn't it be nice if you could just... "ring for a hug" whenever you needed one??  The same probably goes for the people around you but don't wait until they need one... go up and give them a hug every single day. You will feel better giving out a hug and those on the receiving end will definitely benefit. I don't know what it is about a hug, but there definitely is something to it!!

What You Don't Want To Think About... You Will

 Isn't that always the case. You have a phone call that you don't want to make or an appointment that you don't want to go to and that's all you can think about. Unless you can can get a handle on it... this practice will continue to nag you for days leading up to whatever you don't want to think about or do.

That is one reason I want this meditation to work so badly. I want to learn to live in the moment and not waste time thinking about something that will happen in the future.  At this very moment, I'm thinking just about how good a foot rub would feel... and nothing more!!

Got Stress... Head To The Bathroom

 Try to work in a nice long relaxing  bubble bath when you find yourself feeling stressed. There is just something soothing about hot (but not too hot) scented water!! And take a book that you don't mind dropping into the water. If it's your own book... it can dry. If it belongs to the library, and you drop it... more stress lol. And yes, I learned that the hard way.

I made it half way through the 30 day program!  I actually wondered if I would be able to last this long. I have absolutely no patience what so ever and sitting still for more than 2 minutes at a time was a struggle. But I made it. To be honest, I haven't seen any major breakthroughs other than every once in a while I will remember something about what I read or how I felt. And then there are those odd feelings where I seem to be sinking into a different level or something but I haven't experienced that for a few days???   So, I guess I'm seeing a little bit of  progress. I love going back to my first entry to see how I was doing.

I should be quite proud of myself ;)

**I'm trying a technique that might not be what you would consider valid, but I will try it for a few days to see if there are any benefits to it.

Make Your Own Flash Cards!

 Yes, you read it right lol. This afternoon I'm telling you to go out and buy some index cards. You can usually get them in groups of a hundred. You have no idea just how many I have lol. I actually bought a 1000 a few years ago. I use them for everything!

You are going to use them for little reminders of how to leave your anxiety  behind and then each day, you are going to thumb through them for about five minutes.  It's amazing at how much information you can retain from reading these little cards.

40,000 to 50,000 Thoughts a Day??

 I know that my mind definitely likes to chatter, but this many thoughts in one day???  Now if we can turn them into happy thoughts, I think that we would have made our lives a lot more blissful. Sadly, most of our thoughts are given over to whatever fear/negativity is going on in our life. That's pretty sad :( From what I have been learning in my 30 Day Meditation Program, I think that once I have mastered it (to some degree), I should be able to let go of some of these negative thoughts!

 It almost seemed too easy! What is the difference from just listening to someone read to you?? So  I went looking to see what I could find on the topic. Apparently according to the Chopra Centre, it is a way that we can (at home) be guided without a teacher. Yes, I can understand that.

Mar 19... Day 14 of My 30 Day Meditation Program

 Mar 19... Day 14

Fifteen minutes completed today. I'm trying different programs to see if I like one more than the other. Today it was Sleep Bug... you can find it in the App Store on Windows 10! I chose the "forest" but had difficulty with all the sounds which sounds ridiculous I know, but I did manage to get through 15 minutes of birds chirping... (there were several buttons that you can turn off... wolves, and parrots were the noisiest, but I turned them ALL OFF. It was still noisy. I think that it I turned down the sound as low as possible... it might not be so disturbing. Guess that I'm going to just have to get used to noise. I'm going to leave the app on all day just to see if I can work with it on!!

Another Reason That I'm Not Going To Stop My 30 Day Program



Did you know that you having increased amounts of  cortisol in your blood can do some  some really nasty things like increase your blood pressure and cholesterol, which so many of us suddenly find ourselves with as we age. This in turn can lead to stroke and heart disease.  Now if we can take a little time each day to do our deep breathing meditation, we can apparently lower the amount of cortisol in our blood.  Another reason why I'm going to stick to this 30 day meditation program that I am on.

 I really learned something about myself after watching a Tedx Talks today!  Apparently, and it never occurred to me that I deserve to have something to look forward to on a regular basis! Life just isn't like that, but wouldn't that  make for a more satisfying one if it was? And all it took was an amazing 17 year old to point it out to me!  If Sam isn't willing to settle for less, I should really pay attention to what he has to say!

Mar 18 Day 13 of 30 Day Meditation

Fifteen  minutes completed. I am slowly. I am slowly beginning to noticed changes in the way that I think about things... like the way nothing remains the same. Last month I worried for an entire weekend about lab results that came back normal. (I missed the phone call on the Friday to call the office back and had to wait until Monday morning)  Now will I ever be able to control my anxiety the next time something like this occurs? I don't know for sure, but I'm hoping!! But I am pleased with myself that I have gone this long!!

Do It Yourself Cactus Bowl

Sometimes I think that your mood can be lifted if you just get up and do something different... like maybe making a planter for your desk. Warding Off Depression... Are You Taking Care of Yourself??

As we get older, we seem to have so many more people to take care of, but are your forgetting about yourself? Its fine to want to take care of your grown children who can't find a job in this economy and then there are the aging parents that we all want to make as comfortable as possible! And that is just for starters!  Today, be sure that you are doing something for yourself... even if it is just a bubble bath for a half hour with a "Do Not Disturb Sign" on the door. **

Mar 17 Day 12... St Patrick's Day

Meditated in a new location for 15 minutes and was very conscious of the time... likely because of the fact that we lost power during the night and we were still trying to keep warm.

I'm thinking about staying with the 15 minutes instead of trying for longer. I think that the pushing myself might be the reason that "time" is on my mind to such a degree. I also used a new location... on a chair in the basement with a comforter over me. It might be called cheating lol, because it was a "lazyboy" but I was definitely warm and comfortable. I wonder just how important location is to a meditation practice??

I also spent a little time reading this morning about degrees of awareness which is what I might have been experiencing over the last few days when I reported the "sinking" into "something" feeling. Apparently there will come a time when you can achieve such a degree of awareness that  will enable you, very easily, to  notice the fact that you are "fearing" something, and be able to easily let it go. It can't come soon enough!

Day 11 My Brain Wanted To Chatter Non-Stop This Morning

 Managed 9 minutes before I peeked  and then went on to finish for a total of 21 minutes total. Unfortunately, it was not a relaxing kind of a session. A lot of different parts of me are aching big time and no idea why! I have been using a rocking chair because it's the only chair upstairs for me to use... might have to rethink that!

I am really curious to see what happens in the days to come. And I'm definitely buying a timer. I was thinking that if the ticking gets in the way of my concentration, I can simply put the timer outside of the room.

It's funny when you think about time. I have been off sugar for 16 days now and hardly think about it. This whole meditating thing is a whole lot harder. Who would have though!!

Thursday

Day 10 A Bit Better Than Yesterday

 Much better today. I woke up at 7:30 and meditated for 29 minutes... I peeked a few times.  I didn't plan on meditating that long, but something urged me to keep on going and trust me, if I don't want to do something... I don't!  Anyway, I felt myself dropping down into a different level. This not only happened once but I felt it every few seconds. I should look up the stages of meditation... I'm sure that there is a name for it.

Reading definitely helps. Before going down to breakfast, I read for about a half hour. It pointed out that change really upsets people and they allow themselves to feed on the fear of the unknown. This is exactly what I was doing yesterday. I am aware of it now but not sure how to prevent it from taking over.

Today my plan is for slowing down. I seem to be constantly in a rush to get something done. I am in need of quiet and peaceful!!

Day 9 A Little Help For Your Next Horrible Day!

 Whenever you are feeling lousy and need a bit of a time out of all your frustrations, apparently a simple minute of meditation is something that you can do anywhere. You might not have a timer handy, so I set the one on my computer to one minute and then closed my eyes to see how many "breathing in and breathing out it takes to get to a minute. It's 8 or 9 depending on how fast you count.

So now you know!  This could come in quite handy. Just close your eyes or not and start breathing.

DAY 9 Horrible... Just Horrible


Could not sleep... anxiety is on overload!  Was wide awake from 2 a.m. until at 5 a.m. so thought that I might as well get up and start my 15 minutes of meditating. I got up at 5 a.m. not 2 a.m in case you are wondering. There was no point staying in bed staring at the ceiling.

At least one thing positive... at about the 6 minute mark, I began to sink into a different level (I peeked) and then continued until the 15 minute mark passed. (Just used the clock this morning) Would still like a quiet timer is there is such a thing.

Sensation... ear aching again but it began to fade after the 15 minutes of meditating.

I honestly thought that I was getting better at this and then something sends me back to the very beginning or maybe worse!  Day a complete write off because I was so tired.

Tuesday

Day 8... Mar 12

Today was easier. Couldn't believe that 15 minutes could go by so quickly. I think that I will stay with the 15 minutes until day 15 and then I will decide whether to increase the time. I might add another 5 minutes, I can't decide.

I actually felt like baking this morning. I made up all of the dry ingredients for a dozen muffins to be made later in the week. I can't remember the last time I felt like baking!!

Sensations... is another thing that you might feel. Today, the soles of my feet were burning and it felt as if steel  bands were wrapped around my torso. Have no idea what that means, but apparently (I read) if you are suffering from anxiety, physical sensations can manifest themselves.  Even with the looser clothing, I'm still feeling these sensations. I always thought it was because of what I was wearing.

Monday

Day 7 Meditation as Medication... I Want Off Meds...

 Now this is an interesting article and it just might point me in the right direction. I slowly managed to get  off anxiety meds, (I don't think that they were working very well anyway) but apparently they are thinking that meditation just might be able to lower high blood pressure... which I also take meds for. Fingers crossed on this one.

The good thing is that the new doctor wants me to take my blood pressure at home so that she can see how high it is at home AND in the office.  I just might be able to get off those meds too! Now if that isn't an incentive, I don't know what is.  Actually, I don't see her for another month, so that should just give me enough time to complete the 30 days that I "signed up" for.

Day 7... The Shortest Easiest Meditation You Will Ever Do

The article that I linked to below started off with how some people don't get around to the procedure because there is so much preparation. You would be amazed at how much people think they need to do before they even sit down. Okay, that would annoy me too. Just not having a timer annoys me so if you are looking for all of the items that people apparently think that they need, this meditation is for you. There is nothing that you are going to need... and you don't even have to close your eyes.

The closing the eyes part... I don't think that would work for me. I am too easy distracted, but it's good to know if you are shying away because you are overwhelmed. And oh yes... the instructions consist of 3 things. That is it. If only I had found articles like this when I was first starting out.
