When Meditation Isn't Working

What works for me, might not work for you! Just wanted to point that out!!   I had tried several different meditation apps and I was really struggling to get through the minutes. Guided meditations didn't appeal to me, but neither did meditations that featured soothing sounds of the waves, or trickling water. They just annoyed me.  It wasn't until I found an app that allowed me to create my own "sound" meditations did they begin to work. The one that I am listening to now is  entitled "night" and it featured just one sound... wind chimes.   I found the lonely tinkling (seemingly) far away  exactly what I found soothing.  And the audio setting... had to be about as low as I could get the volume to go.

Play around with your apps until you find what is perfect for you!

Today I Didn't Have a Melt Down!!

I'm kind of pleased with myself this morning. My heart was pounding, but  I went outside all by myself!!  While it might not seem like a big deal to you, it terrifies me... especially since I managed to get myself locked out of the house (2x) just at the time when no one else was at home. Okay to anyone else, it wouldn't have been such a big deal. I'm not going to go hungry... we have a massive garden full of fruit and veggies, but it didn't helped. I came pretty close to having a melt down.

This morning... I actually spent an entire hour outside working in that garden!!  I didn't think about the doors locking all by themselves (and yes they have a knack of doing that)  and I actually enjoyed the peace and quiet and everything that I got accomplished.

Will I be terrified the next time that I have to venture out when no one else is at home??  Can't say for sure, but it's just one step at a time. And honestly, I have a lawn chair, granola bars and a book all waiting in a special spot, if those stupid locks should fall.

I really want them all changed, but it seems that its just me who manages to get locked out. (Yes, it's an old house and the locks could be the problem. On the other hand, facing my fears is one thing that I have to take on!!

Music To Snack and Relax To

As I'm pre-diabetic and my sugar drops like a stone, I have a snack every morning at 10:30 !!  This morning I thought that why don't I try to incorporate something new into these session. At first I wondered if I could meditate and eat at the same time and then I thought that is just asking for a tons of cracker crumbs on the carpet, so I looked to see what else I could find on YouTube that might work. This is what I found. It's called 321 Relaxing Meditation and found that they offered a ton of different possibilities, but I zeroed in on 1 minute, 3 minute and 1 hour music selections to listen to. (If you need music to fall asleep to at night, they have that too, but I just wanted music to snack to, so I chose one minute, featuring a sunrise, which was quite beautiful actually!  Anyway, I am leaving the link below. It worked quite nicely for me and I don't think that I dropped even one crumb ;)

Sitting on The Porch and Listening to... "The House"

As I am right in the middle of reading a book, I really didn't want to start another, but listening to one is a whole different story. So, after lunch, I took my cd player out onto the porch and began listening to "The House" by Daniel Steele. At this point, I'm not a hundred percent sure that this was the right pick for me. It's kind of sad, but I'm hoping that the heroine's life is about to turn around.  It was nice to sit out on the porch though... might try doing that with what is left of the summer... if the story improves lol!

I was really hoping that this story would turn out to be a mushy, happily after after kind of story where nothing ever goes wrong.

Are You Happy With The Person You Have Become?

If you could give yourself a makeover, how would you create the new you? How would you be different from the you of today??

Personally, I would start by smiling more. The thing that I notice most about my sister-in-law is that she is always smiling. Heck... she is always laughing about something. That song, "zippity do dah, zippity eh... I'm sure that Ray Gilbert just had to have run across her at some point in his life. ;)

I Think That I Really Hate Alexander Graham Bell

Now this is odd... even for me. I'm have been told/given permission to do something that I want to do but feel guilty about doing it.  Talking to my 85 year old mother on the phone every day is incredibly stressful.  At the end of every conversation that goes on forever I'm so upset about what is going on in her life that it ruins what is left of my day and my sleep as well. And if that isn't enough, according to my sister, most of it isn't true anyway. But the woman loves to talk and if she can't think of anything interesting, she will make it up. I feel that it is my duty to listen. Did I mention the fact that I hate talking on the phone?

Yesterday was one of those days when I could get her to hang up. The conversation went on and on and on and then suddenly she mentioned that I don't have to call every day but could call every other day if I wanted to. Once a week would be more to my liking, but that makes me feel even more guilty.

So, all last night my "monkey mind" went over and over about what should I do. Should I take the day off or should I call?  As I write this post, I'm still trying to come to grips with it. I will let you know.

What Is a 10 Day Silent Retreat REALLY LIKE??

I have been meditating daily since March  and I really want to do this retreat, but I'm pretty sure that I'm not ready. I want to be... but I know that I'm not. Actually, I don't know how anyone can do this!   I honestly hadn't heard about the spiders.

Now if you can get to Day 5... the worst is behind you. At least I think. You still have another 5 days to go. No, I'm still having difficulty sitting still for an hour.  Now the fact that this woman only had 3 months under her belt... well kind of makes me wonder if I'm cut out for this at all.  I think that I will be spending a lot of time trying to sit on the ground and wracking up the minutes. I remember someone telling you to do that... because it's going to hurt... a lot!

Here's What Is Expected of You    I wonder if taking a friend with you would be of any benefit... ahhh, no!

My Saturday Morning Read

I haven't decided whether I like this one or not. It's called "Monkey Brain" by Daniel Smith. I think that I picked it up because I have heard the term so often. Having a "monkey brain" is what makes it soooo hard to meditate. We can't turn off our brain for even a few seconds. Our brain is like a little monkey with more energy than he knows what to do with.

What was interesting is that Smith weaves humor into his memoir. I would never have thought of anxiety as having any humor mixed in.  I'm on chapter two and I have to admit, there have been a few anecdotes that have made me grin.

It's Like a Fall Day Out There

When I first woke up this morning and saw that the temps had dropped... I was not very happy... which isn't the direction you want to go when you are fighting anxiety!! But I had to go out for a few minutes to sweep down the porch (on my to-do list) and was amazed to find that it's quite pleasant out there. Yes, the temps are slowly climbing and I didn't  even need a jacket. Anyway, the porch has been swept and I even found myself humming that song from "13 Going on 30" lol! My day just turned itself around!!

And I got a bit of exercise too ;)

Why You Will Want To Quiet That Constant Chatter In Your Brain

It is thought that we all have this quiet little place deep inside of us that we can only get too if we can quiet down that constant chatter in our brain.  I for one want to access this area on a daily basis if at all possible. If all it takes is a couple of minutes here and there throughout the day and I can find this quiet little place... I definitely want to find it.

Creating A Wish List

I'm always trying new things to see if they will work. Apparently what might work for someone else might not work for me and vise versa. So this morning I added the Wish List to my daily routine. I will keep you updated on whether it works for me or not. You should give it a try too!  :)

Here's are the first 2 things that I put on my list.

1. A really big house
2. A really big lottery win

Lol... not sure what the benefits of day dreaming about "stuff" might be,  but it was fun for a few minutes.

Now Here Is a Scary Thought

Did it ever occur to you that if you don't keep up with your basic routine of relaxation every day, meditating, taking long walks, eating healthy foods, getting enough sleep etc... that you are  increasing the risk of a relapse. You lifestyle has to completely change permanently. Meds didn't work for me... and the minute stress wasn't weighing over me, I fell right back into my old ways!!

What Do You Know About Anxiety??

I have read a lot on the topic, but find that you have to be reminded several times. Every day I start my morning with reading. I love Sarah Ban Breathnack.  Each day I start  I'm reading using one of her books... It's called  "Wanting More"... Apparently wanting more out of life isn't such a bad thing. Really didn't see that coming. I thought that "wanting more" was what got me into this in the first place.

Today's Gratitude Journal Fail

Each day, I try to come up with 5 things to be grateful for. It shouldn't be that hard, but there are going to be times, when your mood is so bad that you will be lucky if you can come up with two... and one of them will be something that you give thanks for... every single day.

So, don't beat yourself up over it. Tomorrow you might come up with 6 things to put on your list. Yes, today my brain wasn't in the mood.  Here's what I came up with...

1. It's raining today, so I won't have to water everything in the garden.
2. I have a healthy family.
3. Both hubby and daughter have the day off!

Guess it could have been worse lol. Here's hoping for some new ones tomorrow!!

Who knows, I might be able to go back to the journal later today and add a few more items!! Here's hoping ;)

How To Stay Happy This Week

It is so easy to slip and fall back into old patterns. Do you think that you can pull it off... for 7 days straight?? Why isn't this easier lol?? I thought that the older I got... the easier or maybe smarter I would become... and then I would know how to be happy without even trying!

Just Do It... Stop Worrying

It's a lot harder than I ever imagined it would be. I managed to pin down (I think)  when I first began to worry needlessly. That was the first thing I thought that I should do.  And as for my title... it's funny how other people think that THAT'S all there is to it.

I hate to think of all the minutes that I have wasted in my life due to worrying. And did it do any good?  Not a second of it.

Here's today's "Something to Think About...

Would an Anxiety Support Group Help??

Another one of those... why didn't I think of this??  Yes, the idea came straight out of a book.  I don't know if you have tried using a psychologist to help with your disorder, but they are incredibly expensive and even with insurance, I tend to run out about half way through the year. ;(  What good is insurance if it isn't there for you??

That's when the next paragraph suggested looking in your own area for a support group. And be sure that it isn't a group where everyone simply moans about what is going on in their life. You need interaction with others granted, but you want feedback too!!

Are You Over-Doing It?

A lot of us who are dealing with anxiety issues are perfectionists. We are never satisfied with a to-do list of 5 things. We have this need to add more items to it. We just aren't working hard enough. Sound familiar?

And if you try to take on more things than are possible, none of them ever get completed. You have no idea how many projects that I have started, but have never seen the light of day. I'm either too busy to get to it, or it's not good enough and somebody might think that it's stupid.

The list that I'm looking at right now is for cleaning the house. It's Monday and that means that floors need to be washed. That takes next to no time and when I'm done, technically I'm finished.  Have to admit that I usually look for something else that needs tidying up, but no stress. If I don't want to, I don't have to!

No Guilt!

My Stressless Way Of Getting Ready To Bake Cookies

**This might drive some people crazy because I have to admit, it does make for a messy kitchen.

However lol... if I'm going to bake in the afternoon, I like to have all of my ingredients and utensils sitting on the counter at my fingertips in the morning. It's just less stressful that way lol... for me at least. It's just one step that I don't have to do when it comes time to put together the cookie dough.

I also use this idea for other things that I do... laundry for example.  I tend to sort that into chunks too... It's something about realizing that I  might be missing an ingredient, or I don't know where the fabric softener is that just drives me crazy.  If I can remove just a little stress from my life each day... :)

Wondering Where My Anxiety Issues Came From??

Did you ever wonder why just about everything seems to upset you these days??  It developed over time... it just didn't arrive one morning and moved in permanently.  I know that mine started when my nephew died. He was born 3 months after my own son was born and my sister and I thought that they would be "brothers" for a lifetime. It didn't happen. He  had inherited a genetic disease and was gone before he was 4 months old. That is when I realized that bad things could happen and there was nothing that I could do about it.  Sadly I didn't realize that if I didn't take care of the situation then and there, I would suffer for the rest of my life.  That was 38 years ago and I have good days and bad days... most of then thanks to relapses... all because doctors simply want to put you on meds for the rest of your life. Didn't work for me and now I'm trying something different.

Something To Think About...

I have lyrics that I want you to think about today. It's a silly song, but that is the kind of day that I want back...

Does Your Library Carry This Book?

Mine didn't but, I was able to have them bring it in from a larger library. It's called... "In a Different Voice" by Carol Gilligan. In the book she talks about how we change as we get older. What ever happened to that teen I used to be?  I was afraid of nothing. I took care of myself and I loved my life!!  It certainly made me what to talk to her again. She would think that I have become such a wuss!  Can't have that lol!

Reading has become part of my morning ritual and from what I have been reading, it has to continue or I could find myself right back where I started.

When Was the Last Time??

There are going to be good days and there are going to be bad days. If this one is shaping up to be a bad one, I have something for you to try. For  play time today we are going to doodle. See how long you can do it before you get bored!! Set  timer for 5 minutes and see if you can stick with it. For some of us, it's going to be hard but stick with it... just let your mind float. Sometimes All You Need Is Someone To Talk To

Some of us don't like to talk to people about what is going on in our lives, but sometimes it really works. I still remember talking to a grief counselor after my sister died in childbirth. In this day in age, woman aren't supposed to die bringing a new life into this world, but it happened and I could not get over it. It was not until all of it came out while talking to my doctor one afternoon. She asked if I would be interested in seeing a woman she knew, who counseled people dealing with deaths.

It took weekly visits for a few months and all I did was talk about how I felt about losing my sister and the anger that I felt. Thanks to this woman, I can now think about my sister and even talk about her without falling apart. Sometimes all you need is someone to talk to...

A No Stress Day

Yesterday was a No Stress Day for us!!  Hubby had the day off and we had errands which turned into lunch out... It was awesome. But, that meant that there was a lot of work in the garden that had been neglected.

Trust me... head out to a garden that is calling your name and you have no time to allow your thoughts to go to places you don't want them to go!

And then a nice cool shower isn't half bad either.  Stay busy and you are in control of your mind!  When was the last time that you had a NO STRESS DAY??  If you can't remember, I think that you are due! :)

A Journal Update

Today, I want you to write in your journal about your feelings. It is so easy for life to get in the way. There are days when there just isn't time... so get it out today and add even a few lines if that is all you have time for.

And then this afternoon... do something for fun! It doesn't matter what it is, just whatever pops into your mind.

It Doesn't Take Much to Undo All The Progress

I won't go into details about what just happened,  but just wanted to point out that you are going to have days like this too. One step forward and three back. At least that is how it feels at the moment. But, I turned to my meditation practice, closed the door and did my best. Okay, not as good as yesterday but I managed.

I also have my books beside me. I think that it is time to do a bit of reading. I just started "Beyond Anxiety and Phobia... for the second time. Here's hoping something will jump out at me. Its amazing how that sometimes happens.

Creating Your Own Treasure Map To Happiness

Have you ever done this??  I think that it is great fun to create the map... because it takes your thoughts away from what you are experiencing at the moment. But will it lead you to happiness?? Maybe you should begin with this list of items to consider.  Personally, I don't think that it would work for me.  But who knows...  everyone is different. Take a look and see if it would for you!!!

What Do You Think??

My Update on My Meditation Practice...

I am closing in on 5 months of meditation and I couldn't be happier. Yes, it can be hard on certain days, but there is just something inside of me that won't let it go. There was a time when I would  get into position and I do my fifteen minutes... but not any more. I now use apps throughout the day and do two minute sessions. TWO MINUTES!!  I actually accomplish more than 15 minutes a day and my mind is not wandering half as much. And... I'm not constantly wondering when the timer is going to go off.

So, if you are having trouble sitting in one spot for 15 or more minutes... maybe it's just not right for you either.  Cut it back to a time that is just right for you.

Meditation Helped a 4 Hour Road Trip

Four hours might not seem like a lot for some people, but for me.. it doesn't get much worse. Yesterday we had a 2 hour trip one way, another wait for a drivers license and the a 2 hour return. I'm not kidding!!  We have moved into the middle of no where!!  Before I began my meditating, no one would have even wanted me in the car,  but hubby even commented on how good I was lol and that is not like him at all!!  And my treat was a coffee and a slice of butter tart pie lol... For him to spend that kind of money (it was a very expensive coffee shop) I must have been good!!
